HA NOI — The National Clubs Cup Pencak Silat Tournament is scheduled to kick off tomorrow in the northern province of Hai Duong.

Martial artists from across the country will compete in both the tanding (combat) and seni (performance) disciplines.

According to experts, this year's tournament is likely to be very competitive, with many locals focused on developing the sport regarded as one of Viet Nam's strong points in the regional, continental and world arena.

At the Southeast Asia Pencak Silat Championship last year, Vietnamese martial artists triumphed with a total of 14 gold, five silver and three bronze medals. Malaysia and Brunei were runners-up. That was the third time in succession Viet Nam finished first in the annual regional tournament, which made its debut in 2008 in HCM City.

Last year, Ha Noi triumphed in the cup, hosted in HCM City, with eight golds and one bronze, followed by Hai Duong with two golds and three silvers, and Thanh Hoa with two golds and two bronzes.

Although failing to break into the top three, HCM City managed two golds thanks to Diep Ngoc Vu Minh and Tran Huynh Thanh Quoc, and at the recent Asian championships in Singapore, they won one silver and one bronze.

The club have been training hard to improve on last year's performance, with their sights set on top spot.

The event will finish next Thursday.

PESAKA satisfied with exponents' showing

Despite failing to achieve the two-gold medal target set by the Malaysian National Silat Federation (PESAKA) at the recent Asian Pencak Silat Championships in Singapore, the national silat exponents are in promising form for the year ahead.

Malaysia collected one gold, three silver and five bronze medals from the 10 events they contested to finish fourth behind Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore.

PESAKA coordinator Osman Nok said although the performance in Singapore was not spectacular, it nevertheless was a good showing from a squad returning only recently to training after a two-month break.

"Considering our exponents have only been in training for less than a month, the fact that they were able to win nine medals from the 10 events we competed in is quite a good result," said Osman.

"It was by no means an easy tournament as all the strong teams such as Indonesia and Vietnam were there, and they were already in peak form as their training programmes had started in early January.

"We were lacking sharpness and physical endurance which prevented us from winning more gold medals, but we will continue to improve as the year progresses."

Osman added that the squad should be more competitive in their next championships -- the Belgium Pencak Silat Open on May 5-12. They will head to Indonesia and Thailand in June and August for two-week training stints in the lead-up to the Palembang Sea Games later this year.

Tawau To Host Nusantara Silat Festival In May

TAWAU, April 14 (Bernama) -- Tawau will create martial arts history of sorts after being chosen to host the International Invitational Nusantara Silat Festival 2011.

Festival director Zaid Abd Hamid said the event, to be held from May 15 to 19, was expected to attract about 700 silat exponents not only from South-East Asia but also from European countries such as Germany and Poland.

"The silat festival comprises two categories, Silat Olahraga (combat) and Silat seni (artistic). The Festival is organised by the Tawau Community College, with help from the Tawau Municipal Council and Sabah government," he told Bernama here Thursday.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman is expected to officiate the event that would be held in Borneo for the first time, while the closing is expected to be done by National Silat Federation (PESAKA) president Datuk Seri Muhd Ali Rustam.
