KUCHING: Some 400 silat masters statewide are expected to attend the Fourth Silat Convention here today.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is expected to officiate at the event at the State Indoor Stadium.

Troupes from the Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS), and the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry will display their prowess in this enduring Melayu martial art with a special appearance by a team from Kalimantan Barat.

10 Silat Exponents To Represent Country In August

KULAI, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Ten silat exponents, including two national silat exponents, will represent the country in the Asean University Games (AUG) to be hosted by Thailand, in Chiangmai from Dec 15-23.

Silat team manager Azli Puddin said with the presence of the two national silat exponents, the silat team has been targetted for two gold medals.

"We believe the target of winning one gold medal each in silat seni and silat olaraga can be achieved," he told Bernama here Friday.

237 IPT Silat Exponents To Fight It Out In DPM Cup

KULAI, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- The Deputy Prime Minister Cup International Silat championships has attracted 237 silat exponents studying in Higher Learning Institutions (IPT) from four countries.

The inaugural championships featuring 29 IPT teams and 12 junior teams, started on Tuesday at the IOI Mall and comprised students from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Head of secretariat for the Championships, Azli Puddin said from the 237, 146 would feature in the men's events while 91 compete in the women's category.

Launch of Dataran Budaya Kuala Lumpur

The Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture today launched the Dataran Budaya (Cultural Square) at Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur. The Dataran Budaya programme is expected to take place on Saturday a month on the street in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

It is an effort to bring together a variety of the arts and cultural products of Malaysia in one venue for the public to enjoy, appreciate and experience. Activities include exhibition of fine art, demonstrations, fashion shows, film screenings and multicultural arts of self defence. Of course, the programme also offers shopping opportunities!

Pre-Asian Indoor Pencak Silat tourney opens in Hai Duong City

The Pre-Asian Indoor Games Pencak Silat tournament opens today at Hai Duong City’s Gymnasium with the participation of more than 10 countries and territories in Asia.

Male and female competitors will take part in Seni (performance) and Tanding (combat) events.

The tournament is also an occasion for Hai Duong City’s sports officials to make preparations to organise the pencak silat event at the Asian Indoor Games 3, which the city will host in November.

In the first Asian Martial Arts Games in Bangkok, Vietnamese martial arts contestants won four gold medals, contributing to Viet Nam’s overall fourth place.

Viet Nam pencak silat is looking to win first place in the AIG 3.

Promotion Test For Pencak Silat

Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 102 youths from pencak silat scheme of Brunei Muara, Tutong, Temburong took part at the promotion test to the higher level ranking held at Menglait Sports Complex.

The promotion test was divided into four ranking: Black stripe, two black stripes, three black stripes and four black stripes.

The guest of honour, Pengiran Sabri bin Pg Hj Mohamad, Deputy Director of Youth and Sports, presented certificate to those who are promoted to higher level.

The promotion test to higher ranking for the pencak silat scheme of the Youth and Sports Department is one of the important activities to measure the level of achievement of the scheme members.

It is appropriate that the skills acquired through hard practice during training should be evaluated.

The event was organised by Youth and Sport Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports to draw and encourage the young martial art lovers to become exponents of the game; to provide an arena for experiment and know the level of achievement of the martial art technique; to give opportunity for young martial arts participants to be active and competent; to strengthen the relationship amongst the members and increase their self-confidence so that they could follow the training system.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

A tribute to silat

There is nothing more satisfying than doing something one is passionate about.
For Mat Ali Mat Som, who has a passion for everything about silat – a traditional martial art of the Melayu archipelago – being able to share it is a satisfaction he cannot describe in words.
Not only has he learnt the martial art, and studied its history and moves, he is now sharing his sculptures based on the art.

The artist is currently holding a solo exhibition at Metro Fine Art Gallery, in Legend Hotel until April 18.
Entitled Dendam Tak Sudah (Neverending Grudge), the show features 21 pieces of his metal sculptures created in the past two years.
In addition to the sculptures, the exhibition also features drawings and sketches of the keris series for this exhibition.
According to Mat Ali, the keris is both symbolic and a weapon for silat. The techniques and styles used for the sculptures are similar to the art of keris-making.
For the 34-year old artist, it all started with the keris.
“I remember making my first metal sculpture – a keris – after watching a television documentary on the keris when I was 10 years old.
“I made the keris using an iron pipe in the garage of my parents’ home in Ampang.

Preliminary work: Sketches and drawings help the artist in his study of silat formations,
especially in capturing the details of the muscles in each move. This sketch was done using charcoal on canvas.

“Throughout the years, I have felt an excitement when I see the metal starting to take shape and becoming what I wanted it to be – just like when I was 10,” said the father of three.
According to Mat Ali, he chose the Melayu expression Dendam Tak Sudah to symbolise the endless struggle and burning desire to achieve one’s ambitions, or even simply to resolve conflict. He said it was not meant to imply violence as some might have thought.
He also explained that the term was no stranger in the Melayu heritage as it was also the name for the a tengkolok folding style.
“The basic silat philosophy is to forgive and not hurry to punish.
“The expression takes on the meaning of mystical artistic passion behind the fluid movements of this particular form of self-defence,” he said.
With titles such as Di Hulu Berkawan di Hilir Berlawan, Setiap Langkah Rahsia Setiap Serangan Mengena, Gerak Kilat Elak Jika Sempat, Sepu Sendi and Anak Harimau, these works show in detail and without any awkwardness, the steps and formations in the martial art.
To produce the sculptures, Mat Ali, who is a silat practitioner himself, started with photographs, which he later transformed into sketches to incorporate his own ideas on the image.

Eye for detail: The artist has a fascination for details, not only concerning the silat moves
but also in the muscle movements and bulging veins, as in this sculpture.

Then he would add the details before producing a master sculpture using clay.
“I have to make a mould of the piece, into which I would later pour the molten metals to produce the sculpture.
“It is always a surprise to see how it looks when I open the mould,” said Mat Ali, who operates from his home in Johor.
Looking at the works, one will see minute details, from the keris to the life-like muscles and veins.
The muscles and bulging veins, especially on the hands and feet of the sculptures, evoke the impression that the silat practitioner is in a rage, or is anticipating something and ready to make his move.
Mat Ali said each piece took him about a month to complete. Metals such as tin, aluminium, zinc, iron, steel and various other alloys, were melted and then moulded into the shape that he wanted.
He said differences in the metal combinations used, temperature of casting and polishing produced different colours and textures in the sculptures.
Using more brass, for example, would give rise to lighter colours, compared with iron.
The recent hikes in the prices of metals had also affected his work production.
“I need at least RM5,000 just to get the metals for each piece of work, and that does not include all the creativity, effort and time spent,” he said, adding that the artworks, measuring about 30cm (one foot) each, were priced at an average of RM12,000. each.

Silat man contests Bukit Gantang

Kamarul Ramizu Idris, the sole independent candidate for the Bukit Gantang seat, has forked out nearly RM100,000 for this by-election. And he is doing this to promote his yet-to-be-registered Parti Iman Se-Malaysia.

The 42-year-old entrepreneur said his brand of "spiritual politics" was important as people were obsessed and corrupted by the trappings of power.

"Win or lose is immaterial. I'm not worried about that. All I want is for my multi-racial party which promotes faith and spirituality to be known," he said. He is also unfazed that he will be losing at least one vote - from himself as he is not a registered voter. And the reason why he did not register was because he had yet to find a "true leader", he said.

"My role model is (Independent Pasir Mas MP) Datuk Ibrahim Ali because he is true to his principles. If I win, he will have me to accompany him," he added.

Despite being a virtual unknown and starting late in his campaigning - he only went campaigning on Monday - Kamarul is confident of getting at least 20,000 votes as Bukit Gantang is his "playground" because he was born and bred here.

He claimed that even his rivals were getting jittery over his progress with the voters."Maybe they are threatened by my concept, they are afraid that I will affect their votes," he said.

Clad in his velvet songkok and trademark sunglasses - "The glare is hurting my eyes," he says - Kamarul goes campaigning in his black Mercedes trailed by a convoy of six cars comprising volunteers from Persatuan Seni Silat Gayung Pusaka Malaysia, of which he is the 'khalifah' or sifu. Why did he pick the umbrella as his logo? "Because Taiping is the wettest town in Malaysia."

Kedah Sultan launches book on keris

Steeped in tradition: Sultan of Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’ad­zam Shah putting a keris into its sheath to officially launch the ‘Semangat Keris Melayu’ book at the auditorium of the state public library at Jalan Kolam Air in Alor Setar yesterday.

With him are the Kedah Royal House Association chairman Datuk Tengku Zainol Rashid Tengku Yahya and Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

The book, written by Emil Bahari, is being sold at RM25 per copy. An exhibition on keris was also held at the library.

Congratulations to my old university-mate, Emil Azril Bahari for his coup de grace in publishing this long awaited book. At least I know my copy will be an autographed one.

Penubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Gabungan Pulau Pinang

Pada hari Ahad, 18hb. Januari 2009 bertempat di Penang Golf Resort, Bertam, Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang telah berlangsung satu majlis penuh adat-istiadat Melayu iaitu Majlis Perasmian Penubuhan Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Gabungan Daerah-Daerah Negeri Pulau Pinang & Majlis Penganugerahan Sandang dan Bengkung Kegurulatihan Silat Seni Gayong.

Majlis yang berlangung dari jam 2.15 hingga 5.00 petang itu dan dihadiri oleh lebih 150 orang jemputan khas telah disempurnakan oleh Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Zainal Abidin Osman, Penasihat Kementerian Kemajuan Luar Bandar dan Wilayah (KKLW) merangkap Ketua UMNO Bahagian Nibong Tebal.

Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Daerah-Daerah (SPU, SPT, SPS, TIMUR LAUT, BARAT DAYA) di negeri Pulau Pinang telah didaftarkan semula dengan Pejabat Pesuruhjaya Sukan Malaysia dibawah Akta Pembangunan Sukan 1997.

Sehubungan dengan itu pihak Jawatankuasa Gabungan telah berusaha mengatur strategi dan merancang aktiviti bagi menggerak serta mengiatkan semula aktiviti Silat Seni Gayong di negeri Pulau Pinang.

Selain daripada bertujuan memperkenalkan semula serta mempromosi Silat Seni Gayong di negeri Pulau Pinang diantara objektif utamanya ialah untuk menyediakan platform bagi menjana aktiviti sihat dikalangan golongan remaja dan belia disamping meneruskan kesinambungan khazanah warisan bangsa. Adalah juga menjadi harapan pihak jawatankuasa agar Silat Seni Gayong dan lain-lain Silat Melayu menjadi salah satu wadah perpaduan orang-orang Melayu.

Pada Majlis tersebut, tujuh orang pemimpin masyarakat Pulau Pinang yang terdiri daripada ahli politik dan tokoh korporat telah dianugerahkan Sandang Kehormat Mahkota Bintang Pelangi:

Cikgu Ahmad Ismail turut menerima Bengkung Kegurulatihan tertinggi didalam Silat Seni Gayong iaitu Bengkung Hitam Harimau Pelangi Cula Sakti (Cula VI) daripada Pn Hjh Fadhillah.

Selain daripada itu, bagi mengenang jasa-jasa beliau didalam mengembangkan Silat Seni Gayong di seluruh negara khususnya di Pulau Pinang, Cikgu Ahmad Ismail telah di hadiahkan sebilah keris berlok tujuh, berpamor Beras Wutah, berwarangka Jogja dari Jawa Timur.

Congratulations to Datuk Haji Maideen Kadir Shah

Silat Melayu: The Blog would like to congratulate the honourable Datuk Haji Maideen Kadir Shah, Vice President of Persatuan Seni Silat Cekak Malaysia on his conferment of the Darjah Kebesaran PANGLIMA MAHKOTA WILAYAH (PMW) by His Royal Highness Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin which carries the title of 'Datuk'.

He was conferred the honour at the Istana Negara in conjunction with the 35th Anniversary celebrations of Federal Territory Day on 2nd February 2009.

Datuk Haji Maideen was one of the late Ustaz Hanafi's original students and played an important role in bringing Silat Cekak Malaysia back to the fore after the controversial leadership crisis of 1993.

Silat in "Ransan"

Budding cinematographer Raja Mukhriz Raja Ahmad Kamaruddin or better known as Raja Mukhriz is following the footsteps of his mentor, award-winning cinematographer-director Bade Hj Azmi, to take the director's chair. Mukhriz, recently bestowed Best Cinematographer at the 21st Malaysian Film Festival (FFM 21) for his outstanding work in Syamsul Yusof's "Evolusi KL Drift", is ready for his upcoming mega project "Ransan", due for filming this 10 November 2008.

To our surprise, Mukhriz dispelled all rumours about the selection of ace star Farid Kamil as the lead when he revealed that a contractual agreement cannot be reached between both parties. The chosen replacement is the hunky Jehan Miskin, deemed fit to play Jingga, one of the eight main characters in "Ransan", a concept resembling the "Lord Of The Ring" franchise.

Speaking via telephone to Cinema Online, the first time director explained: "I decided to make a movie started when my close friends and Bade Hj Azmi, (who is also the executive producer) kept on motivating me. Of course, my passion is cinematography but I don't see any harm in trying out something new, especially if the chance is right before me".

"Ransan" which centres on the traditional Malay martial art of silat, also contains Japanese manga influences.

Mukhriz elaborated: "It's not a typical martial arts flick. It's presented in a different approach, whereby the silat in this movie doesn't involve the usage of keris as we emphasise more on bodily movement. I drew references from Wilson Yip's "Dragon Tiger Gate", Wachowski brothers' "Matrix" and "Fight Club". It'll involve brutal fights and a lot of blood. To me, "Ransan" can be described as the local reflection of such movies".

As to why he is going for such an ambitious and aggressive approach for his first movie, the future husband of actress Sharifah Shahora admitted that he's a big fan of those flicks and has been thinking of making something similar for a long time.

"Despite the possible censorship, I don't want to limit my creativity. We don't know until we try. I will deliver my work accordingly and let the authorities decide," explained Mukhriz.

"Ransan" is poised to be an action-packed adventure about a warrior city called Ransan. Headed by a fearsome leader named Indera Ilani (Nasir Bilal Khan), it was invaded by a group of villains led by Kalam Jagat (Ramli Hassan), leaving Indera dead. Eight years later, Indera's son, Bayu (Aaron Aziz) returns for revenge.

"Ransan" is also likely to see the line up of local big names such as Sharifah Amani, singer Atilia and Shoffi Jikan. The silat rehearsal for the cast is in progress at the Green Hornet studio in Bandar Tasik Permaisuri, Cheras under the guidance of former silat exponent, Komeng.

Shooting will involve the locale of Gunung Helang, Perak. "Ransan" is to be produced by Merah Maya Motion Pictures with a budget of RM 1.6 million.

Welcome to SMC 2.0. For those who have emailed me asking why we never got around to upgrading the website, thank you for the concern.

The obvious question for many, is why have SMC when we already have Silat.TV? Well, to be fair, SMC started first, but never really got off the ground. The original idea for SMC was for it to be a website gathering together the best information about silat online promoting silat from a Malaysian perspective.

Since then, a lot of blogs have appeared with good content on different Malaysian styles, driven by members of those styles. We feel that SMC's role in that area has diminished slightly. To avoid competition with these sites, we have decided to go the way of Facebook, MySpace and of course, Silat.TV, social networking.

Thus, SMC now stands for Silat Melayu Community, hopefully a welcome change to all. What's different between SMC and Silat.TV? We share some of the same members, but SMC aims to have a more religious and cultural approach where we explain the role that Islam and the Melayu culture plays in defining silat, as most Malaysian pesilat already acknowledge.

We are not out to proselytize, but we do want to present a more accurate picture of silat as we've inherited it, not nominally how it's being practised. As some can already witness, modern living has forced silat to abandon quite a bit of its roots, producing simply fighters instead of champions of right.

Some might disagree with our views, but this is what we intend for the site. You are welcome to stay and see what we truly mean by this. Thus, all content that we put up (not the members) will tend to portray a more cultural angle. We will have content on silat music, dress, adat and adab, kebatinan, medicine, etc as long as we can find authentic sources.

We are deeply saddened and angered at the wanton destruction of life that the authorities in Israel are perpetrating on our brothers and sisters in Palestine. We condemn such acts of violence towards non-combatants who have nothing to defend themselves with.

Our condolences to those parents who have lost their children, those children who have lost their parents and those who have suffered alone all this while.

We pray that this horror stops or we risk losing our humanity in total.

Silat group wants others not to use its logo

KUALA LUMPUR: The Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia (PSSGM) has called on silat exponents outside its group to stop using the organisation’s logo for political purposes.

Worried that there might be a repeat of the incident during the Permatang Pauh by-election when a photographer was beaten up during a ceramah, PSSGM’s acting president Adiwijaya Abdullah said the reputation of the organisation was at stake.

Adiwijaya said they were blamed for that incident because those who hit the photographer were wearing the PSSGM’s logo.

“Our organisation does not teach people to be samseng or hitmen. We urge silat exponents and our members to not get involved in anything like this in the coming Kuala Tereng­ganu by-election,” Adiwijaya said at a press conference here yesterday.

He added that what silat exponents outside the PSSGM were doing was only confusing the public, bringing a bad name to the organisation.

Adiwijaya said the organisation was registered in 1963 with the Registrar of Societies and had some 500,000 members around the country.

“Our organisation teaches exponents to be loyal, respect leaders and love the Malay culture. Anything we do is to uphold these beliefs,” he said.
