Khalil Proposes Complex Dedicated To Hang Tuah In Melaka

MELAKA, March 8 (Bernama) -- The Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob has proposed the building of a housing complex dedicated to Malay warrior, Hang Tuah, as a new tourist product.

He said the complex should project Hang Tuah as a well known statesman, ambassador and silat exponent.

"With a hall, silat arena and his staff's housing quarters it will be a tourist attraction.

"It will make Hang Tuah more well known as a Melaka icon on par with other international legends and be an inspiration to the present generation," he said.

The complex was among several proposals by Mohd Khalil to further develop Melaka's tourism sector in his speech to open the Melaka State Assembly sitting at the Seri Negeri complex in Ayer Keroh here on Monday.

He said now Melaka's leaders were only known through road names or their graves without much information and this does come to bear on the new generation.

Mohd Khalil also suggested that Melaka-produced products be branded and that Pulau Besar be made a well known tourist draw in the region.

He called on local authorities to pay attention to aspects of cleanliness and beauty of green spots as a tourism attraction.

The sitting continues tomorrow.

mashaAllah! such a great idea! but will it show the real Hang Tuah? or wil it just another contribution towards the misunderstanding and misleaded information about this choosen man?
may Allah Ta'ala give us rahmah and guidance.

Salam ustaz,

Honestly, I think it'll be homage to the popular figure of Hang Tuah, and not the real person. I wonder what the sage old man would say when he finds out how he will be portrayed?

I pray this works out well, if the suggestion is ever taken up.

Salam Nadzrin,

I would love to know where I can read about Hang Tuah. I know nothing about the man and how he became entrenched in our history.

Could you point me in teh right direction please.

Thanks.

Salam Gee,

It would be difficult to point you in the right direction, documentation-wise.

There are many versions of his life. It is however, up to the individual which version to believe.

Here are some versions you might be interested in:

1. Sejarah Melayu: Hang Tuah was named Daeng Mempawah, a Bajung prince who was presented by the King of Gowa (Sulawesi) to Sri Bija Pikrama, Sultan Mansur's minister as part of a groomed youth force that would serve him in their adulthood.

2. Hikayat Hang Tuah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikayat_Hang_Tuah): Hang Tuah was a commoner born of Hang Mahmud in Pulau Duyung, Melaka (some say Pulau Duyung, Kelantan)and grew up in the Sultan's court as a warrior.

3. Kedah-Siam empire historical theory (http://sejarahnagarakedah.blogspot.com/search?q=hang+tuah): Hang Tuah is a historical figure named Narai Iskandar Mahkota Alam who lived in the 17th century with much of his well-known exploits being fabrications.

4. Spiritual support: Many pesilat and Malay spiritualists support the view that Hang Tuah, late in his life, especially after performing the haj, became a very religious man and that he was eventually granted sainthood. I personally believe, through the attestations of my teacher, Ustaz Ahmad Junaidin Che Din and his teacher Sheikh Mahmud Nasri Osmani, that Hang Tuah truly is a Wali Allah.
