Kuala Lumpur, March 12 (VNA) - Fourteen of 16 artists of the national Pencak Silat squad secured berths to final matches of various weight categories at the on-going world Pencak Silat Championships in Singapore.
The squad's coach Tran Kim Tuyen announced the results on Mar. 12, adding that with innitial triumphs, the Vietnamese team hoped to keep the champion title.

Breaking new ground for world silat
JOHOR BAHARU, March 12 (Bernama) -- Come October when Malaysia host the 2007 World Silat Championship in Seremban, three countries should be joining the fray for the first time
The International Pencak Silat Federation (IPSF), the controlling body for world silat, expects Azerbaijan, India and Italy to make their debut in the weeklong meet at the Paroi Sports Complex
"Representation at our World championship is getting bigger and this time we are expecting Azerbaijan, India and Italy to take part for the first time. Which is good because we want the sport to grow globally and hopefully make it to the Olympics one day," said Eddie Nalapraya, the president of the IPSF on the sidelines of the 2nd World Junior Silat Championship which ended in Singapore yesterday
Jakarta-based Nalapraya, who has been at the helm of the IPSF for the past 27 years, commended Malaysia for stepping forward to take over the host's job after Phuket was supposed to have done it in December last year
"The military coup in Thailand changed things and I am grateful to the president of the Malaysian Pencak Silat Association Datuk Mohammad Hassan (who is the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan) for agreeing to take over," added Nalapraya
The IPSF, with its headquarters in Jakarta, has 33 affiliates and, according to Nalapraya, India will send a team to the Indonesian capital for training in preparation for the World meet
"And the Italians, I believe, have a good junior side and are ready to expose them in Malaysia in October. Of course, pencak silat is quite popular in Azerbaijan," he added
At the recent meet in Singapore, which also featured a Senior Open meet, nine countries took part. They are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Russia, Belgium, Japan, Brunei and Singapore.

Silat trainer claims trial to rape charge
A SILAT trainer claimed trial to raping two of his pupils at the Klang Sessions Court yesterday.
Baharuddin Zakariya, 54, pleaded not guilty to raping two girls, aged 20 and 14, at his training ground in Teluk Gadong, Klang.
The first victim, 20, was allegedly raped by the accused towards the end of 2006.
The 14-year-old was allegedly raped on Jan 17 in a bush near the training ground at 11.30pm.
Judge Zunaidah Mohd Idris fixed RM10,000 bail for each charge and fixed April 12 for mention.

Silat master on rape charges
KLANG: A silat master was yesterday charged with raping two of his students.
Baharrudin Zakariya, 54, is alleged to have raped a 20-year-old student on a bench at his silat class in Klang at the end of last year.
He was also charged with raping a 14-year-old student in some bushes near the silat centre on Jan 17 at 11.30pm.
Baharrudin claimed trial to both charges and was granted bail of RM20,000 by Sessions judge Zunaidah Mohd Idris who fixed April 12 for mention. He posted bail.

HIGH HOPES PLACED ON JUNIOR SILAT EXPONENTS COMPETING IN WORLD MEET
JOHOR BAHARU, March 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian challenge at the 2nd World Junior Silat Championship in Singapore lies on the shoulders of the country's two most promising exponents - Adlan Abdul Majid and Nurul Farhana Abdul Majid
They are not related but country's hopes are on them in the three-day meet at the Bedok Sports Hall from Friday to Sunday where participation from 15 countries is expected
The 17-year old Adlan from Pahang was voted the Most Valuable Exponent in the recent National Junior Meet here from Feb 22-25 while Nurul Farhana, 16, was judged the Most Promising Athlete
Coach Nasri Nasir, who heads a three-member coaching team to the championship, is putting his money on the two of them to deliver the goods
"It's difficult to predict what will happen in Singapore because the last World Junior meet was held a long way back, in 2000 in Vietnam," he said, adding that he anticipated the strongest opposition to come from the hosts, Vietnam and Indonesia
The 32-member squad is now in training at the Youth and Sports Complex here and will leave for Singapore on Thursday, A total of 26 gold medals are at stake - 20 in the tanding (fighting) category and six in the seni (artistic) category
The three-day meet will also coincide with the Invitational World Pre-Junior meet (12-13 years) and also the Singapore Open Senior Meet (17-40 years) in which Malaysia are sending a full team
However, as the National A team is in preparation for the Belgium Open next month, the Pencak Seni Silat Association of Malaysia have decided to send their National B team instead
"But we are also targetting five gold medals in the Senior meet," said a team spokesman

Gayang Lima & Lian Padukan
I was trawling the net looking for some updated silat stuff and came across a couple of new Videos on Buah Pukul (well, at least new for me). Since these files are long, I've decided not to embed them here. The first video file was uploaded by MR TM at his blog Gayang Lima and records a grading session.
The second set of videos are of Lian Padukan, a close cousin of Gayang Lima. Watch both videos and you'll see the family resemblance. As an introduction to both arts, I've pasted below edited versions of their descriptions, taken from their websites.

Seni Silat Gayang Lima or Buah Pukul Mersing. In Malay, 'Seni' means Art, 'Silat' means Fighting Techniques, 'Gayang' meaning Swaying and 'Lima' is Five. On the other hand 'buah' means fruit and pukul means 'to hit' or 'beat'. Our 8 bodily weapons namely 2 knuckles, 2 elbows, 2 knees and 2 feet represent the 'buah' which readily divert, block and attack our opponent/s under the inspiring movements of our divine master known as 'Lian'.
"Lian itu Pukul, Pukul itu Lian, Lian itulah Guru kamu" meaning "Lian is combat, combat is Lian, Lian is your Master".
In Gayang Lima, there are 12 disciplines of Lian which are taught in the Gayang Lima syllabus. Upon completion of the 12 Lian, the student will further master the advance techniques of 'Buah Tingkatan'. These consist of 36 types of single blows within the reach of our weapons known as 'langkah maut' or deadly steps. It's all translated in the lian, in which our weapons to us, are secret to our enemies.
Frankly, and with due respect to other martial arts, if a student just completes 3 Lian disciplines and adheres to them strictly, he or she can be involved in fights and win brawls. By the nature of it, Gayang Lima teaches offensive techniques as compared to self defence methods.
I studied this exciting combat art from Abdul Rahman Bin Abdul Majid aka Pak Atan Air Batu. According to him, this art was inspired to Sayidina Samaon Al-Radzi, an Arab immigrant to Yunan Province in China. Later on it was brought to Malaya (now Malaysia) by Syed Abdul Rahman Al-Yunani in the 19th century. He then taught it to a prominent majistrate of Mersing town in the State of Johore by the name of Awang Daik. Awang Daik named it Gayang Lima . It is also known as Buah Pukul Mersing or Buah Timur. It was further taught to Pak Teh Mat Yasin who then passed it on to Pak Atan. Pak Atan also trained under Chu Aman, his senior under the same master. In the Gayang Lima mastery lineage, Pak Atan represents the 11th generation.
The thing about this martial art is that you never enter it to leave it for other types of martial arts. By all means, if you do learn and master all the other types of martial arts, it's a refining process, as natural as Gayang Lima itself.
There is no room for arrogance in us. God created us, and everything that we do with the knowledge that we have acquired are all at His mercy. Gayang Lima emphasizes these humble traits in our quest to master our skills. After all, we are only human.

Lian Padukan is a form of Malay martial art (Buah Pukul) and yet it is quite distinct from other forms of Malay martial art. Lian means "way" while Padukan means "fortified strength".
In the 21st Century the Martial Arts have come of age with many exponents cross-training in a number of disciplines in order to ensure that they develop a weel -rounded range of skills. Silat Lian Padukan embodies this ethos of constant improvement and innovation so that an art which was brought to Singapore in the 19th Century by a part Arab-part Chinese Moslem has grown to encompass the Malay art of Silat and the Thai art of Muay Thai. And always this art has been put to the test with generation after generation of exponents fighting both armed and unarmed to prove the efficacy of their art.
The Master who gave this art its current name, Guru Tua Pak Mat Kedidi, is no exception having earned the nom de guerre of The Black Beetle when fighting his way to become a Thai Boxing champion in southern Thailand. He acquired this name because of the buzzing sound his kicks made as they cut through the air and into the opponent with unswerving accuracy.
Pak Mat took the art handed down through successive generations from the time that Syed Abdul Rahman Al-yunani came to Singapore in 1836 and combined it with his experience in numerous other styles of Silat as well as Muay Thai (Tomoi) to create the 99 forms of Lian Padukan. Included among the Lian are the two principal weapons of the art, the staff and the tekpi (iron three pronged truncheons known in Japanese Marial Arts circles as Sai).
Although the entire syllabus maybe learnt in 6 or 7 months of intensive study, to become fully competent takes the average student two years. Those who wish to further their study may undergo the formal Khatm ceremony after which they will be eligible to learn the advanced techniques including the infamous Tujoh Makam (also known as the Buah Seminggu), which involves seven days of intensive training with each and every hour spent one on one with the teacher.

PERSIB honoured at 'Nobat' ceremony
The Perguruan Seni Pancak Silat Gerak 41 yesterday held the "Nobat Prasetia and Sukmawira" presentation ceremony to honour local silat exponents as well as the Pancak Silat Association of Brunei (PERSIB).
The afternoon gathering was held at the Balai Sarmayuda of the Language and Literature Building in Berakas. It also marked the beginning of a new session of training for the 2007 intake of silat trainees.
The guest of honour at the event was the Director of the Language and Literature Bureau, Dr Mataim bin Bakar, who also opened proceedings.
PERSIB is an organisation dedicated to the development of the Malay traditional art of self-defence - silat - in the country, both as a sport and as martial art. At the gathering, certificates were presented to new and present office-bearers of the various committees of the association.
The pencak silat training curriculum comes in three categories - basic, primary and secondary - of 12 levels altogether. Trainees will strive to achieve the various "kependekaran" (warrior) status, from young master all the way to guru tua (senior master) and mahaguru (supreme master).
